Wolves ‘agree loan deal’ for former Man Utd and England star five years after he quit Old Trafford for move abroad

FORMER Manchester United star Angel Gomes is set for a return to the Premier League.

Gomes, 25, left Old Trafford after 14 years when his contract expired in 2020.

He has advanced his career with five-and-a-half years in France – initially at Lille before joining Marseille last summer on another free transfer.

However, it is understood he is ready to head back to England.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Gomes has agreed a loan move to strugglers Wolves.

The Prem’s basement boys look set to pay just under £1million as a loan fee to Marseille, where Gomes is under contract until 2028.

There is then an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer for around £6m.

That is likely to be heavily dependent on whether Wolves, somehow, manage to avoid relegation.

The Molineux side have picked up just one win and eight points so far this season and sit 17 points from safety with 14 matches remaining.

Reports state the switch has been approved by Marseille and it is simply a case of sealing the formalities and paperwork.

Gomes has struggled to nail down a starting spot under Roberto De Zerbi at the Stade Velodrome this term.

He has four goals in 20 appearances across all competitions and was an unused sub in four of Marseille’s eight Champions League matches – including against Real Madrid and Liverpool.

Gomes also sat out of the 1-0 home win over PSG in September.

The diminutive midfielder – who has Angolan and Portuguese heritage and is Nani’s godson – has played through every age category for England from Under-16s through to seniors.

His four first-team England caps came in late 2024 – all under interim boss Lee Carsley.

Wolves boss Rob Edwards has only been able to add Chinese midfielder Xu Bin, 21, on a free transfer from Qingdao West Coast – plus Dapo Anunlopo has joined the academy – in January.

He has until 7pm on Monday evening to bring anyone else in to boost their slim hopes of survival.
