It comes after an astonishing week where the US captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and threatened Columbia with military action.

The US President told Fox News: “We are gonna start now hitting land with regard to the cartels. The cartels are running Mexico, it’s very sad to watch what’s happened to the country.”

Trump earlier boasted of his global powers when asked what his limits were in the region.

He told The New York Times: “My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.

“I don’t need international law. I’m not looking to hurt people.”

Trump has marked up Greenland, Cuba and Columbia as his next potential targets in threats that have angered world leaders and NATO.

The president has hinted at invading Mexico in a bid to attack its cartels since his election campaign.

He warned its leaders to “get their act together” in the immediate aftermath of his weekend strike on Venezuela.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly rejected the offer of US support to tackle drug traffickers in her territory.

Trump even interrupted the interview to take a call from Columbian president Gustavo Petro who previously said he would “take up arms” himself if the US attacked.

Trump’s threats come days after the US snatched Venezuelan despot Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores from Caracas.

Operation Absolute Resolve unfolded under the cover of darkness when some 150 military aircraft, including fighter jets, bombers and reconnaissance planes, took off from 20 military bases and Navy ships.

In a series of fast-moving events, the capital was rocked by explosions.

Just hours after the operation, Trump turned to Venezuela’s neighbours to the West, Colombia, warning President Gustavo Petro to “watch his ass”.

He said: “Colombia is very sick, too, run by a sick man, who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States, and he’s not going to be doing it very long.”

Asked if military action was an option, he replied: “It sounds good to me.”
