Nightingale got out of the blocks well in his event, and fought off a push from Aussie Adam Lambert in the middle of the course.

Lambert then crashed out spectacularly, practically confirming a medal for Team GB should Banks hold her nerve.

Nightingale went on to finish second, a fraction of a second behind France, leaving his team-mate in a good position to make a charge for gold.

After a slow start, Bankes turned things up and began closing in on France steadily, making a spectacular late overtake to claim gold for Britain.

The duo qualified thanks to a late comeback from Banks in the quarter finals, ending in a photo finish alongside their Aussie rivals.

Things were more comfortable in the semis as Nightingale left Banks in touching distance of the French frontrunner.

Bankes quickly reeled her in before making a daring early overtake and cruising to a dominant win after that.

And now a composed finals performance has added to Team GB’s medal tally for the Games.

They add to Matt Weston‘s skeleton gold earlier this week.

And Team GB could be set for yet more good news today, with Weston set to hunt for another gold later today in the mixed doubles skeleton event.

He’s aiming to be the first Team GB athlete to medal twice at the same winter games.
