SIR Keir Starmer faces Labour civil war amid fears he will cave in on migration and drag Britain back towards the EU.
Some MPs are demanding he holds firm on a tough immigration crackdown — while others are pushing to water it down.
And doubts have emerged over whether Labour will fully apply stricter settlement rules to migrants already living in Britain — alarming MPs who see it as a retreat on a policy they say voters endorse.
One told The Sun: “It is one thing U-turning on unpopular policies.
“But Keir cannot seriously be about to U-turn on a genuinely popular policy.”
The backlash intensified after ex-Deputy PM Angela Rayner branded the plans “un-British”, fuelling expectations of a behind-the-scenes compromise.

A separate Brexit row erupted yesterday after London’s mayor Sadiq Khan said it was inevitable Britain would move back towards the EU, and trade minister Chris Bryant refused to rule out them fighting the next election on reversing Brexit.
But it sparked fury among Red Wall MPs.
Group leader Jo White told The Sun: “Now is not the time or the place to be talking about going back into the EU.
“What we need to focus on is good trade deals and what is best for our economy.”
Downing Street insisted there will be no return to the single market or customs union.
But it said it will continue “improving our relationship” with Brussels.
