Her sick mother also turned a blind eye within the house of horrors, in West Sussex.

Another sister was also abused at the hands of those who she should have been able to trust the most, the court heard.

The evil family members have now been locked up for almost 100 years, at Hove Crown Court.

They were convicted on 39 charges including rape, sexual assault, cruelty, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.

An uncle was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice after the family were arrested.

The schoolgirl, now aged 13, was abused at any hour of the day or night by her family.

She first remembers being attacked from the age of six but the abuse could have started earlier.

When she tried to tell her mum, she was beaten, locked in a cupboard and starved for two days with her mouth taped shut.

She would be burnt with cigarettes, hit with a horse whip, spat at and forced to cover marks on her body with makeup.

The girl’s mother said she made her life hell, so she would put her daughter through the same.

Meanwhile, one of her brothers started to attack her when she turned nine after giving her Lego.

When she turned 12, the victim confided in a teacher at school and revealed she didn’t want to go home.

An investigation later uncovered the years of abuse and reign of terror.

The girl told police: “I was really scared to go back home because I knew mum and dad would hit me a lot.

“I said I don’t feel comfortable going home because of my parents.

“I told how my parents keep abusing me and they’ve been doing it for years.

“Then I started explaining all the sexual stuff.”

When she finally spoke out, the mum tried to get the girl to lie to police.

Jennifer Knight KC, prosecuting, said: “Her mother told her daughter that the whole family were suffering because of what she had said.

“She said her grandfather was too old to be in prison for life.”

When the family were arrested in January last year, the girl was put into foster care.

Following a trial, they all appeared for sentencing at Hove Crown Court on Friday, February 6.

The dad, 43, was convicted of five counts of rape of a child under 13, one count of sexual assault by penetration of a child under 13, three counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and three counts of cruelty to a person under 16.

He was sentenced to 28 years in prison, with an additional five years added to his licence as part of an extended sentence.

Her mum, also 43, was found guilty of four counts of cruelty to a person under 16, two counts of false imprisonment, and one count of perverting the course of justice.

She was locked up for ten and a half years.

The grandad, 70, was convicted of one count of sexual assault by penetration of a child under 13, and two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13.

He was thrown behind bars for nine years, with an additional year added to his licence period as part of an extended sentence.

Her older brother, 24, was found guilty of four counts of rape of a child under 13, one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The judge added an extra three and a half years added to an existing sentence being served.

The younger brother, 21, was convicted of four counts of rape of a child under 13, two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison.

The victim’s uncle, aged 49, was also sentenced to three years in prison.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Harbour said: “This has been a complex, distressing investigation that has had a profound and ongoing impact on the two young victims.

“Throughout, our priority has been, alongside our partners, the safety of these two girls. I would like to thank them both for the courage and strength they have shown in supporting the investigation.

“This case has involved harrowing details of how the defendants abused the trust of both young victims. Their home should have been a place of love and support, but was in fact a place the victims feared.

“The defendants preyed on that fear and hoped it would silence them. But the victims’ voices have been heard.

“Our officers have been determined to get justice in this case, and we are pleased that the court has imposed significant custodial sentences to reflect the seriousness of the crimes.

“I hope this case highlights Sussex Police’s commitment to bringing such offenders to justice, if you are or know someone suffering abuse please do report it.

“We urge the public not to speculate about the case online as this may jeopardise the victims’ legal right to anonymity.”
