Vikas Kumar Ujjwal, Divisional Forest Officer of Hazaribagh East confirmed the tragic fatalities.

“Among those killed [were] four members of a family,” he said.

“One child was also seriously injured … [and] has been admitted to the Sadar Hospital in Hazaribagh for treatment.”

According to villagers, the herd arrived around midnight and tore through the houses, flattening everything in their way.

“They came suddenly and destroyed everything in their path,” one resident told local media.

They said the chaos and fear had gripped the community on Thursday night.

Witnesses said the attack had left homes destroyed and residents terrified, with one elderly woman the sole survivor from her household.

Ujjwal urged the Gondwar village residents to “remain vigilant and avoid wooded areas”.

“Our teams are monitoring the herd and issuing alerts in affected villages.”

He added that the herd had been “roaming in Bokaro, Ramgarh and Hazaribagh districts for the past few days”.

The jungle giants had also caused casualties in Bokaro.

Loudspeakers have since been installed to warn residents of any further danger.

Aditya Pandey, Sub-Divisional Officer, called the incident “a very tragic loss”.

Families were also assured that compensation would be provided under government rules.

Local MLA Nirmal Mahato spoke to local media, saying: “It is heartbreaking to lose six lives in one night”.

Mahato expressed anger over the needless deaths.

“The department has failed to act decisively, and villagers are paying the price,” he said.

The tragedy has reignited fears over human-elephant conflict in Jharkhand, where migration routes often bring herds into populated areas.

Grieving families and frightened residents have since demanded stronger preventive measures to stop further deaths.

Several lives have been taken in recent months as the clashes between people and elephants in Jharkhand remain ongoing.
