Carrick spoke with United chiefs on Thursday, having been on holiday in Barbados with former teammate Wayne Rooney.

Solskjaer moved back to Cheshire in September after he was sacked by Besiktas.

Carrick’s last job in management was with Middlesbrough but he left after failing to secure a Championship play-off place last year.

Sources say Carrick has kept a low-profile amid United’s sudden interest following the sacking of Ruben Amorim on Monday morning.
