Monster mother-in-law, speeches from hell and drunk bride KISSING another man…The worst wedding antics revealed

HE music’s blaring, champagne is flowing and the dancefloor is packed.

But behind the smiles, sequins and speeches, a wedding can be seconds away from total meltdown.

Families clash, tempers fray and old grudges resurface, often long before the bride reaches the aisle.

And while the day is meant to be about love, bringing two families together under pressure can turn even the most carefully planned celebration into chaos.

This week, the Beckham family feud has played out in public, after Brooklyn claimed his mum Victoria hijacked his first dance with bride Nicola Peltz.

According to Brooklyn, just as he was about to enjoy a romantic moment with his new wife, Posh jumped in and “danced very inappropriately” with him in front of guests.

He also claimed the former Spice Girl pulled out of designing Nicola’s wedding dress at the “11th hour”.

Shocking as the allegations may sound, wedding planners say fall-outs in the run-up to the big day are far from unusual.

Bringing together two families, often with clashing expectations, emotions running high and alcohol flowing freely, can be a recipe for disaster.

Michelle Jacobs, an award-winning wedding planner and founder of @elegantbymichelle, says tensions regularly flare during the planning stages.

“Planning a wedding can easily sour family dynamics,” she says. “It’s meant to be a time of joy, but you can’t please everyone.

“Guest lists and table plans are some of the biggest flashpoints.

“In most cases, by the time the big day arrives, everything has calmed down and people muddle through.

“But in situations like the Beckhams’, it’s incredibly sad when the fallout lasts.”

Here, Michelle — along with fellow planners Nalini Raman and Maria O’Neill — reveals some of the most jaw-dropping wedding disasters they’ve ever witnessed.

MOTHER-IN-LAW WEARS WHITE

WHEN it comes to wedding-day rows, planners say one figure repeatedly pushes boundaries: The mother-in-law.

“They often want to wear inappropriate dresses that would steal the bride’s thunder and I have had to say no,” explains Michelle.

“Once I had a groom’s mother wear off-white, which obviously goes against all wedding etiquette.”

FOUND DRUNK IN A BUSH

GUESTS love an open bar, but when the drinks keep flowing, judgment often disappears just as fast.

Michelle says: “Parents will often provide a free bar and guests get carried away getting very drunk.

“Once, I found a guest drunk in a bush and had to call an ambulance.

“Another time, everyone had gone and we were clearing up when I found someone slumped behind a pillar.”

SISTER STEALS BRIDE’S THUNDER

THE pressure of a couple’s big day can bring out the worst in family, and  Michelle has witnessed blazing rows between siblings.

She says: “One bride had a total meltdown with her sister just before she was supposed to leave the house and walk down the aisle.

“She was screaming at her sister, saying she always tries to steal the show.

“The bride cried so much that the make-up artist had to completely redo her face. The ceremony was very delayed.”

MUM REDUCES GROOM TO TEARS

OLD family tensions have a habit of resurfacing at weddings, sometimes with devastating consequences, according to Nalini Raman, founder of Knots And Nuptials.

She says: “One groom didn’t have a good relationship with his parents and didn’t want them at his wedding.

“I’m not sure why they fell out but they hadn’t spoken in decades. In the end, he invited Mum but not Dad.

“The mother was very loud and moaned repeatedly throughout the day to me, fellow guests and her son that her husband wasn’t invited. There was a lot of awkwardness and murmuring among guests.

“He asked me repeatedly throughout the day to keep his mother away from him.

“She made a speech to welcome the bride to the family and the first thing she said was, ‘Sadly my partner couldn’t be here today’.

“The groom got tearful. We had to edit her words out of the video.”

BROTHER OF THE BRIDE’S DRUG BAN

FOR some guests, the wedding party atmosphere is an excuse to let loose in all the wrong ways, including bringing drugs into the celebration.

Nalini says: “The bride’s brother was caught taking drugs in the bathroom by venue staff, in one of the biggest wedding disasters I’ve seen in my career.

“Security was called and he was ejected from the venue right in the middle of the drinks reception.

“He was high and thought it was funny, but he did leave when asked. The bride was more embarrassed than anything.”

BRIDEZILLA BEASTS PLANNER

FOR planners, few situations are more awkward than a bride losing control on the big day.

“Bridezillas are not uncommon but on one occasion a bride yelled at me on the day in front of the entire catering crew,” Nalini says.

“The bride had a strict schedule and she got upset as one of the relative’s make-up wasn’t finished in time, according to her spreadsheet.

“We still had plenty of time, but she was very rude and yelled at me. I never got an apology but she did later write a glowing review of my services.”

DRUNK BRIDE KISSED SNAPPER

WHEN the fizz starts flowing too soon, wedding planners warn that even the most carefully organised days can veer off the rails.

Maria O’Neill says: “One bride got very drunk before the reception had even started. She’d been knocking back champagne all day and then there was a cocktail reception at the venue.

“Thankfully the ceremony went off without a hitch, but then the photographer then took the couple outside to a park to take some photos and as he approached the bride to try to change the angle of her body, she leant in and kissed him on the lips.

“He told her he’d leave and not take any more photos unless she sobered up a bit.”

The groom was drunk too and didn’t seem to care.

RANTY AUNTIE LOSES IT ON STAGE

SPEECHES are meant to be heartfelt, but planners say they are often where long-buried family tensions erupt.

Maria says: “A father of the bride said he was too shy to give a speech and his wife also refused. It was the bride’s aunt who stepped up but she had a fractious relationship with her sister.

“The bride insisted she could only speak for five minutes and checked her notes in advance.

“But once the aunt got hold of the microphone, she launched into an attack saying how she and the bride’s mum didn’t get on and how hard that had been for her.

“Everyone in the room was cringing and didn’t know where to look. She broke down in floods of tears, becoming hysterical, and the bride and groom had to jump up and remove her from the stage.”

THE GREEK SUNBATHING TRAGEDY

DESTINATION weddings are meant to be idyllic — but planners say they can make problems even harder to hide.

“One family had a fall-out in the lead-up to their wedding abroad,” Maria says.

“It was between the bride, her brother and his wife, who initially refused to attend the ceremony.

“Eventually she agreed to fly to Greece but, on the day, decided to sunbathe instead of going to the wedding. The bride was in tears when she had to walk past the pool before the ceremony and saw her laid down in a bikini sunning herself.

“Other guests were annoyed, but tried not to pay attention, and focused on the bride.”
