A MAJOR wildfire has ripped through a popular moorland – with thick plumes of smoke and flames visible from miles away.
Locals have been warned to stay away as fire crews continue to battle the roaring blaze near Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
Emergency crews were scrambled to the blaze – which broke out near a wind farm at Scout Moor – just before 5.45pm yesterday.
It is not yet known how the fire started, but teams have been battling through the night to extinguish it.
Five fire engines, a drone and a wildfire unit have been dispatched to help tackle the roaring flames.
Residents in Eccles – roughly 19 miles away – have reported seeing the fire.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: “We are currently in attendance at a wildfire under Scout Moor wind turbines.
“Several fire engines and our drone team are on scene, working with Greater Manchester crews to bring the fire under control
“We urge members of the public to stay away from the area while firefighters carry out their work.
“Your cooperation helps us manage the incident safely and effectively.”
