As much as 50mm of rain could lash certain areas bringing more travel chaos possible flooding after Storm Chandra battered the UK last week.

Following recent rain and falling temperatures, wet surfaces are expected turn icy this evening said the forecasters.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for London and South East England, South West England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Residents should be wary of untreated surfaces on roads, pavements an cycle paths as they might be icy.

The forecasters explained: “With wet surfaces following recent rain, and temperatures falling close to or below freezing, icy patches will be possible on untreated surfaces for a time on Sunday night into Monday morning.

“Cloud increasing from the east later in the night may allow temperatures to recover, but it will likely remain cold with an ongoing ice risk in western areas into the morning commute hours.

“A few freezing fog patches may pose an additional hazard.”

Icy conditions will continue into Monday for the same regions and drivers should check road conditions before they travel.

Brits using public transport may need to amend their travel plans if needed.

Alongside icy conditions, the Met Office has issued another yellow weather warning for the South West.

It said persistent showers across the area on Monday afternoon and into Tuesday could lead to flooding due to the already saturated ground.

The meteorologists added: “Accumulations of 10-20 mm are possible fairly widely, with perhaps as much as 30-50 mm over Dartmoor.”

Heavy rain is not certain, they continued but the downpour could cause travel delays, damage to properties, power cuts and even flooding.

“There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life,” the Met Office cautioned.

The same rain warning for the South West remains in place for Tuesday morning.

Brits in the area are advised to plan ahead and prepare an emergency flood kit.

The downpour follows last week’s chaos caused by the torrential rain of Storm Chandra.

The rainfall left regions underwater and residents were hit with road closures and cancelled flights.
