Brown, 66, was last in charge of the National League North outfit on Saturday as they were beaten 3-0 by South Shields.

Peterborough Sports have failed to win any of their last seven games and have dropped into the relegation zone.

Brown has swapped his position in the dugout to take up the director of football role.

The former Derby County and Hull City manager was without a club for six months before joining the club in September.

Striker Michael Gash will take charge of the team until the end of the season, having been incharge before Brown’s arrival.

Chairman Tim Woodward has hailed Brown’s efforts despite the club’s difficult season.

He said: “I would like to personally thank Phil for his commitment and contribution in his time as manager in this extremely hard season.

“We find ourselves in a precarious position with 11 games to go.

“I know I can rely on everyone’s full support for Gashy and the whole team in what will be 11 cup finals to maintain our position in the National League North.”

Brown has managed up and down England‘s football ladder and is best remembered for the iconic half-time team talk at Hull.

The Tigers were 4-0 down at Manchester City in the Premier League back in 2008 when he made the decision to give the talk on the pitch in front of the travelling fans.

Star Jimmy Bullard poked fun at the moment the following season after scoring an equaliser at the Etihad Stadium.

Brown left Hull in 2010 and went on to have spells at Preston North End, Southend and Swindon Town.

Now in the sixth tier of English football, he has revealed that he needed time to adjust to the level.

He told BBC Look East: “Everybody remembers the highest level [with Hull].

“But if I did something here with Peterborough Sports, there’s no doubt in my mind it would be a great achievement,” he said.

“If I can keep Peterborough Sports in this division, first and foremost… if we survive this year, which is our first goal.

“Then it’s all about next year and can we get promoted? Can we move this club on?”
