Having been in League One as recently as 2023, the Shrimps find themselves 23rd in the National League and on the brink of relegation to the sixth tier.

In a club statement yesterday, Morecambe confirmed that a former supplier had served a winding up petition against them.

It began: “Morecambe Football Club can confirm that it became aware yesterday afternoon of a winding up petition that had been filed against the Club seven days earlier by one of its suppliers, KPM Groundworks Limited, in relation to a legacy debt incurred prior to the takeover by Panjab Warriors in August.”

The Shrimps had severe financial issues under former owner Jason Whittingham in recent years.

They have been placed under transfer embargo multiple times, and on July 12, 2024 signed FIFTEEN players after a four-month ban was finally lifted.

The very future of the club was in jeopardy last summer when they were suspended by the National League.

But they were able to continue operating when Panjab Warriors were able to finally buy the club from Whittingham.

Morecambe’s statement on their current predicament continues: “This was the first notification the Club had received regarding this action.

“Since becoming aware of the petition, the Club has been in immediate dialogue with both the supplier and its legal representatives, with the aim of reaching an agreement to have the petition withdrawn at the earliest possible opportunity.

“The Club will continue to keep supporters informed and will provide a further update as soon as it is in a position to do so.”

Following last summer’s takeover, the Shrimps decided to part ways with boss Derek Adams, the man that had guided them to League One and stayed through last year’s financial turmoil.

Ashvir Singh Johal, 30, was subsequently appointed – but Morecambe sacked him in January after he achieved just six wins in 32 games in all competitions.

Former boss Jim Bentley was announced as Singh Johal’s successor, returning to the club he spent eight years with between 2011 and 2019.

Two late goals by Alex Reid consigned the Shrimps to a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Hartlepool last night.

The result left the Shrimps 23rd in the table, six points from safety with just six games remaining.
