It’s no secret that the trick to pulling together high-effort outfits with minimal effort is investing in good-quality basics. And in the winter months, there’s no piece I reach for more than a lightweight, long-sleeve knit. Whether it’s a merino wool tee from COS, or a cashmere-blend roll neck from H&M, a knit top is the solution to all my cold-weather conundrums.

What I love about them is that they look just as fashion-forward on their own, as long as I accessorize the outfit with a statement belt and jewellery, as they do layered under a structured blazer. Often, they’re also slightly sheer, which means they’re just the right amount of subtly sultry for a candle-lit dinner, but not too revealing for the office. And they’re also comfortable to wear and, most importantly, will keep you warm.

I’ve curated a selection of fine knits over the years, but it’s a category in my wardrobe I’m always looking to add to. And last winter, as I scrolled the Heattech section on Uniqlo.com, I found one of my favourite fine knits yet: a turtleneck T-shirt made with 9% cashmere. So I hit ‘add to cart’ and that was the start of a new obsession.

Initially, I only picked it up in the black version, but I soon realised its potential and ordered the off-white version too. And I’m so glad I did, because they quickly became one of my most-worn winter wardrobe staples. Why? Because they’re not just soft, but warm too (specifically around 1.5 times warmer than Uniqlo’s jersey Heattech pieces). And they’re only £19.90.

I’m clearly not the only one who’s obsessed with the range either – due to its popularity, the Heattech Cashmere blend, which first launched back last winter as part of Clare Waight Keller’s UNIQLO:C collection, has now expanded to men’s. And they’ve added a whole bunch of new colours too, including light grey, wine, light blue, navy and dark brown.

Time for another trip to the high street…
