DRIVERS in the UK can cut the upfront cost of an electric car through a recently-released government subsidy called the Electric Car Grant (ECG).
Introduced in 2025, the scheme is intended to make EVs more affordable and currently covers more than 40 models – including some of the nation’s favourites.
The ECG is split into two tiers, or “bands”, with most eligible motors falling into Band 2, where buyers can receive a discount of up to £1,500 that’s applied immediately at the point of purchase.
These include some corkers, such as the brilliant Cupra Born and the recently revived Nissan Micra.
But it does get even better, as there’s a smaller group of vehicles that sit in Band 1 and attract a larger discount of up to £3,750.
These include the Citroen e-C5 Aircross Long Range, the Ford E‑Tourneo Courier and even the Ford Puma Gen‑E – an electric version of the nation’s best-selling motor.

The new, UK-built Nissan Leaf, which will begin to be delivered to buyers this month, will also join Band 2.
James Taylor, Nissan GB’s Managing Director, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be able to confirm LEAF’s pricing at £32,249 including the electric car grant, which will deliver an accessible route to EV ownership for our customers.
“This is fantastic news for people looking to switch to fully electric motoring as they now have the reassurance that comes from a car with up to 386 miles of range, all the tech they could want and the real-world benefits that come from Nissan’s 15 years of EV expertise.
“Best of all, it’s proudly built right here in the UK.”
Cars typically need to be M1 passenger vehicles, which is classed as a car designed for carrying passengers and featuring no more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat.
They must also produce zero exhaust emissions and have a minimum range of 100 miles.
Furthermore, they must meet “minimum sustainability” criteria and other government requirements.
More than 35,000 drivers have used the grant since it launched in July 2025, with EVs racing record levels of ownership – making up around one in four new car sales.
