WHO can forget the infamous moment when Mark Wright’s mum was “just getting her shopping and everything” as she bumped into her son’s ex in the supermarket on Towie.
Carol’s horrifically cringy run-in with Lauren Goodger remains a beloved viral clip that reality TV fans cannot get enough of – and it’s still as uncomfortable 14 years on.
Carol Wright, 65, has opened up about the moment when she informed Lauren that Sam Faiers was coming over for a Sunday dinner in an Essex supermarket.
It left Lauren blindsided and wondering if Sam was dating Mark behind her back.
Carol, who is the mother-in-law of Michelle Keegan, admits she is not happy with how she was portrayed in some of the 154 Towie episodes she appeared on.
The mum recently spoke about what happened during her six years on the show– from 2011 to 2016 – on her new podcast Wright at Home with her daughter Jess Wright and Gemma Collins.

“I was like the miserable mother-in-law to be,” she said on the Wright at Home.
“But you weren’t,” Gemma told Carol.
“I wasn’t that person,” Carol added.
Gemma said: “That scene in the supermarket goes out daily on Instagram.”
Much of the drama she was involved in was centred around Mark’s 10-year long on and off relationship with Lauren – and the mum was never shy of sharing her advice.
Carol, who says in the early days of Towie she got paid £50 a day, said on her podcast: “Honestly, every time I see a gay couple or a gay man he comes towards me and goes ‘oh I love that scene’, and I go ‘what you talking about?’”
“She hates it,” says Jess. Carol said: “I hate it, I hate every part about it.
“But it’s the way they used to catch me on camera like this miserable person that never smiled.”
After the clip was shared on TikTok, people rushed to comment.
“Come on she didn’t think Lauren was good enough for her son,” said one.
“This scene is biblical…I’d have that one loop for eternity, Carol 4 ever,” commented one other.
“I felt sorry for Lauren in those episodes,” added another.
One other said: “I’d like to think Carol feels bad now, I do feel like she’s coming across better on this.
“Maybe an apology would put everything to bed.”
“I really have seen a different side of Carol, I think she is lovely,” observed another Towie fan.
“It was the mums who really made it [the show],” insisted Gemma.
In another clip, Carol spoke further about her role as a mother-in-law as a listener sent it a dilemma which read: ‘Whenever my mother-in-law comes over, she acts like I stole her son’.
After her mum began to speak, Jessica interrupted: “Be careful what you say, mum, cause the narrative of you at the minute is that you were the worst mother-in-law in the world.”
Carol laughed and then continued with her point: “But, I’m a bit different, because I actually hold back, because of that reason.
“I always think that when the girl comes into our family, they feel a bit overpowering [sic] because there’s so many of us, so […] I hold back a bit.”
