BRUNO GUIMARAES has been forced into isolation after being diagnosed with a highly infectious disease, missing Newcastle United’s derby draw.
The Brazilian star was sidelined for the 1-2 defeat against Sunderland at St James’s Park this weekend.
Newcastle had initially taken the lead through Anthony Gordon but Chemsdine Talbi equalised before Briuan Brobby struck in the 90th minute to seal victory for the visitors.
Guimaraes took to Instagram to explain his absence, saying: “The only reason I’m not at the stadium in Newcastle is that after our flight from Barcelona.
“I noticed that my face was swollen and I thought I had an allergic reaction.”
He continued: “But the next day when I went to work I realised it was much more than that.

“I sent a photo to the doctor and he came to examine me.
“It was confirmed that I have mumps and I need to remain in isolation for the next five days and stay away from physical activities for a bit longer.”
He added: “My focus now is to recover and to be 100% as soon as possible.”
The timing of Guimaraes’ illness is particularly unfortunate as speculation continues over a potential move to Manchester United.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe confirmed the midfielder’s absence ahead of the Sunderland clash, emphasising that the player’s health comes first.
Guimaraes’ return remains uncertain, though the club will monitor his recovery closely before he resumes training and match action.
The setback adds to Newcastle’s challenges as they look to maintain momentum in the Premier League amid mounting transfer speculation.
