Thomas, 39, called time on his career back in September 2025 after completing the Tour of Britain in his home town of Cardiff.

The Welshman has since been working as the director of racing at Ineos Grenadiers.

In his free time he had been preparing to run the London Marathon next month.

However, he suffered a setback after suffering an injury in early March that halted his practice for a fortnight.

Thomas then attempted to run again but was in a lot of pain as he managed 15km.

He has now confirmed that he has withdrawn from the event that sees 56,000 runners take to the streets of London.

Speaking on the Watts Occuring podcast, he said: “Did a little run and called off the marathon in a months time.

“I just can’t run, I have had two weeks off with this little injury niggle and I tried on Saturday.

“I just couldn’t run, I was just like hobbling and it felt horrible.

“I did 15km, I could get around a marathon but I would end up in a box an dnot be able to walk for a bit.

“I was just like there is no point, it was not very pretty so knock it on the head and do it next year hopefully.”

Thomas was a star on the bike during his competing career as he won the Tour de France in 2018.

He also finished second the following year and third in 2022, as well as earning podium finishing atthe Giro d’Italia in 2023 and 2024.

The iconic footrace could be set for a major change in the future, with organisers in reported talks over extending the event.

Reports claim that a Double London Marathon could be held in 2027, which could raise more than £130million.

The initiative is thought to have the backing of the office of Mayor Sadiq Khan for it to be staged on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April next year.

It would see over 50,000 runners compete on each race day.
