Wolves and Aston Villa meet under the Friday night lights in a fiery Black Country derby, with both sides desperate to put a much-needed win on the board.
It’s a matter of when, not if, Wolves are relegated to the Championship after a desperately disappointing campaign. It’s been a painful season for supporters to endure, with just one victory in 28 games and only 18 league goals scored, leaving them 17 points from safety with ten matches remaining.
There was more agony last weekend as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace following Tolu Arokodare’s missed penalty. But there would be at least some satisfaction in seeing off their rivals — and avoiding the ignominy of being labelled the worst side in Premier League history.
Rob Edwards’ side need just two more points to surpass Derby’s record-low tally of 11 from the 2007-08 season, and their reasonable record in this fixture could yet help them get there.
Wolves have won four of their last six Premier League home games against Aston Villa (D1 L1) and are unbeaten in the last four at Molineux since a 1-0 defeat in December 2020.
Aston Villa won’t want that happening on their watch, but denting their rivals’ hopes is probably the least of their worries after a difficult stretch.
Unai Emery’s side have managed just one Premier League win in their last four outings and now find themselves looking over their shoulder. They sit just three points clear of fourth-placed Manchester United and only six ahead of Champions League-chasing Chelsea and Liverpool.
A return to winning ways is needed.
The good news for the Villans is their recent record in this fixture. They’ve won three of their last four Premier League meetings with Wolves – as many as they managed in the previous 15 combined.
They’ve also taken 22 points from their 13 away league matches this season, a record bettered only by leaders Arsenal.
